Exploration Activities

Interview a Purdue Student: Lauren Bellamy

In many cases, the best person to learn from is your peers. For this reason, I chose to interview Lauren Bellamy about her political science major. This interview made me realize that some majors may be used to assist you in whichever career you chose rather than instruct you on how you complete that career specifically. This made me realize the importance experiences, from the present and the past. It’s the knowledge that you gain along the way that will help you grow in both your professional and personal life.

Marketing Your Major Project: Kinesiology

I incorporated this artifact into my portfolio because it demonstrates a college major I am seriously considering after taking into consideration that various personality and professional tests I have taken. The main reason I am considering this major is because it is prepares you for graduate school for physical therapy. If I were to do this activity again, I would focus more on connecting kinesiology and what it’s frequently linked to, pre-physical therapy. This would include covering topics such as what course overlap these two areas, what extracurriculars may be beneficial to these two areas and what additional activities these two paths may require.

Attend a Special Event:An Evening with the Old Masters

One of the most beneficial things an individual can do is learn from what others have done before them. This includes both their successes and their mistakes. For this reason I wanted to attend and learn from some of the most notable Purdue alumni. The lessons I learned during this event have inspired me to take advantages of the opportunities that Purdue provides its students. Additionally, they have armed me with knowledge that will help me move up and grow in whatever career field I chose.

Inventory Results

SDS (Holland Code)

The information that the SDS provided me with, my holland summary code, has become a basis for my career and major search. When considering a particular profession or educational focus, I will frequently consider their holland summary codes and match them to my own. This information has affected my major and career decision by establishing certain parameters. I will frequently search for careers that are associated with a science or mathematics fields, are hands on and have some social aspect involved regularly.

Strong Interest Inventory

This inventory provided me with particularly helpful results when compared to the information of the other tests. It uniquely provided me with career occupations that best match what I enjoy and what I am looking for in other occupations. As a result of receiving the results of this test, I am not planning on taking courses that will work towards the pre-physical therapy track, an occupation that was highly recommended. The result of this test have not only provided me with an idea of what career to pursue, but I have provided me with a better sense of comfort, reassurance, and support in making this decision.

Professional Activities

Résumé

I chose to incorporate this document as an artifact because it reflects what I have done since arriving at Purdue. It demonstrates what I am passionate about and what matters the most to me. This activity will allow me to demonstrate to employers what I can bring to their company and why they should hire me. This item will grow with me as I grow as an individual and acquire more experience. A résumé will be instrumental in my future, it is what is likely required when applying for job or promotions. This artifact will likely be a key reason for getting me in the door for future jobs and activities.

LinkedIn

One of the most challenging aspects of finding a job and getting a kickstart to your career is forming connections between yourself and others in the career field you are trying to pursue. For this reason I wanted to create a LinkedIn profile that would have the potential and the power to connect myself with others who can possibly act as mentors. This activity pushed me look at what professionals in the career field I am considering would look for. In addition to making my own LinkedIn profile, this activity allowed me to explore other peoples professional experiences and discover what experiences  have allowed these professionals to being and succeed in their careers.

Project from Another Class

For this section, I decide to include my Action Project Proposal from a study abroad course called Global Leadership in Peru. The purpose of this project was to take the knowledge and material that we had learned throughout our time in Peru, and our time on Purdue’s campus, and translate it into a the real world by implementing some sort of movement into campus. Looking back, if I were to do anything differently, I would have managed my time better. While putting this project into action, we ran into unexpected differences that really set us back. Having managed my time better, we would have had more time to brainstorm, make another plan, and been more effective in our end results.

Take the time to reflect and grow as an individual.
